Technological Singularity

Definition

The Technological Singularity is a theoretical future point in time when technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization. It is primarily driven by the emergence of smarter-than-human intelligence and the exponential acceleration of progress.

Why It Matters

The singularity is the ‘event horizon’ of history. If it occurs, the nature of intelligence itself changes, making all previous human experience potentially obsolete. Preparing for it is the ultimate ‘insurance policy’ for the human race.

Core Concepts

  • Vinge’s Singularity (The Event Horizon): Focuses on the Unknowability of the future. Once machines are smarter than us, we cannot predict their actions, creating an “opaque wall” across history.
  • Kurzweil’s Singularity (The Paradise): Focuses on the Law of Accelerating Returns. The exponential growth of hardware leads to a human-machine merger, the defeat of aging, and immortality.
  • The Rapture of the Geeks: A cynical term for the religious overtones of the Singularity movement, characterized by rituals of purification (rationality), the escape from the body (uploading), and the anticipation of life everlasting.
  • Extropianism & Transhumanism: Movements that view the Singularity as a “Messianic” event that will save mankind from its greatest fear: death.
  • Intelligence as “Secret Sauce”: Unlike previous revolutions, this singularity involves a change in the nature of intelligence itself—the force that creates all other technology.
