Intelligence Augmentation

Definition

Intelligence Augmentation (IA), also known as Cognitive Enhancement, is the use of technology (implants, drugs, or interfaces) to increase the native cognitive abilities of a human. Unlike synthetic AI, IA keeps a biological human “in the loop,” aiming to create a hybrid intelligence that is safer and more aligned with human values.

Why It Matters

We are approaching a biological ceiling. IA is the path to “keeping up” with synthetic intelligence, potentially merging the speed of machines with the values of humans to avoid being sidelined in our own future.

Core Concepts

  • Direct Neural Interface: Connecting computers or AI processors directly to the brain’s neurocircuitry (e.g., Neuralink or cochlear implants).
  • The “IA over AI” Argument: Ray Kurzweil and others argue that IA is safer than stand-alone AI because the resulting superintelligence “will be us” and reflect our values.
  • Sidestepping Drives: An augmented human may override the “Basic AI Drives” (like self-preservation at any cost) with human ethics and empathy.
  • The Violence Multiplier: A counter-argument that superintelligence might simply multiply existing human flaws (grudges, aggression, greed), turning a “fistfight into a murder.”
  • First-Mover Inequity: The richest or most powerful (military, CEOs) are likely to be augmented first, potentially leading to a “transhuman” class that dominates the rest of humanity.
