Rationality

Definition

Rationality is the quality of thinking or acting in accordance with reason or logic. In formal contexts, it is divided into Epistemic Rationality (forming accurate beliefs) and Instrumental Rationality (acting to achieve one’s goals).

Why It Matters

Rationality is the “correction fluid” for human evolution. Our brains are built for a prehistoric world that no longer exists; without a commitment to rationality (minimizing bias, updating on evidence), we are prisoners of our own instincts. It is the only tool we have to align our powerful technology with our actual values.

Core Concepts

  • Epistemic Rationality: Pursuing truth through Bayesian updating.
  • Instrumental Rationality: Optimizing actions for utility maximization.
  • Cognitive Biases: Patterns of deviation from rational judgment.
  • LessWrong Community: Culture focused on improving human reasoning.
