Steel Man Technique

Definition

The Steel Man Technique is the practice of addressing the strongest possible version of an opponent’s argument, even if they have not presented it that way. It is the opposite of the Straw Man Fallacy.

Why It Matters

The Steel Man technique is the ‘ultimate truth-seeking’ move; by addressing the strongest possible version of an opposing argument, you ensure that your own ideas are robust enough to survive the most rigorous criticism, elevating the entire quality of the debate.

Core Concepts

  • Adversarial Collaboration: The goal is not to “beat” the person, but to test your own ideas against the most robust opposition possible.
  • Charity Principle: Assuming the best intentions and highest intelligence of your interlocutor.
  • Improving the Argument: Helping the other person clarify and strengthen their position before you attempt to critique it.
  • Truth Seeking: If your own position can survive a critique of the “Steel Manned” version of the counter-argument, your position is significantly more likely to be true.
