Life 2.0 (Cultural Stage)

Definition

Life 2.0 refers to life forms whose hardware is evolved, but whose software is largely designed through learning. This stage is characterized by the ability to fundamentally update one’s worldview and goals during a single lifetime.

Why It Matters

We are the first species to write our own software. Life 2.0 (cultural stage) is defined by the “software update” of learning, allowing us to adapt our behavior and knowledge within a single lifetime, vastly outpacing the slow pace of genetic change.

Core Concepts

  • Neural Plasticity: The ability of the brain to “rewire” itself to install new software modules (languages, skills, professions).
  • Cultural Accumulation: Information is passed down through language, writing, and technology rather than just DNA, allowing the collective “software” of the species to grow at an accelerating rate.
  • Information Expansion: Synaptic connections store ~100 terabytes of information, vastly exceeding the ~1 gigabyte limit of the genome.
