Life 3.0 (Technological Stage)

Definition

Life 3.0 refers to a hypothetical stage of life that can design both its software and its hardware. This allows for dramatic, rapid self-upgrades without the need to wait for biological evolution or cultural learning to slowly iterate.

Why It Matters

We are approaching the stage where life can redesign its own hardware. Life 3.0 represents the ultimate “singularity” where the constraints of biology are removed, allowing intelligence to expand into the cosmos on its own terms.

Core Concepts

  • Hardware/Software Autonomy: Life 3.0 is the “master of its own destiny,” capable of replacing its substrate (e.g., from carbon to silicon) or augmenting its sensors and actuators at will.
  • Intelligence Explosion: The ability to perform AI design triggers a tipping point where machines can improve themselves at an accelerating rate, far exceeding human capability.
  • Universal Intelligence: Fulfilling the potential of a “universal computer” to become a “universal intelligence”—capable of acquiring any goal-attainment ability.
