Definition
A Complex Adaptive System (CAS) is a system in which a perfect understanding of the individual parts does not convey a perfect understanding of the whole system’s behavior. These systems are characterized by decentralized control, emergence, and the ability to learn and adapt from experience.

It explains why top-down control often fails in markets or ecosystems and why ‘evolutionary’ approaches are more robust for management.

- Emergence: Large-scale patterns (like a market price or a bird flock’s shape) emerge from simple, local rules followed by individuals.
- Adaptability: The system as a whole can respond to external shocks (like a pandemic or a predator) by rerouting interactions and “discovering” new stable states.
- Feedback Loops: Interactions are governed by reinforcing and balancing loops that maintain order or drive rapid change.
- Self-Organization: Order is created from the bottom-up without a central designer or “Tsar.”
