Fragility

Definition

Fragility is the property of a system to suffer disproportionate harm from stressors, volatility, and disorder.

Why It Matters

It predicts system failure under stress, requiring fragile nodes to be shielded or restructured.

Core Concepts

  • The Triad:
    1. Fragile: Dislikes disorder (e.g., a glass vase).
    2. Robust: Resilient to disorder but does not improve (e.g., a steel beam).
    3. Antifragile: Loves disorder (e.g., the immune system, muscles).
  • Convexity: Antifragile systems have a “convex” response to stressors—the potential gains from disorder are greater than the potential losses.
  • Over-optimization: Highly optimized systems (just-in-time supply chains) often become fragile because they have no “slack” to handle unexpected shocks.
  • Optionality: Having many small bets with limited downside and unlimited upside is the primary way to build antifragility.
