Definition
The Downward Spiral is a self-reinforcing process of civilizational decay where Concentrated Tribalism and Hypercharged Tribalism pull a society’s center of gravity from high-rung Power Games and Liberal Games down into low-rung power games vs liberal games. It occurs when the guardrails of reason and common humanity are eroded by primitive instincts.
Why It Matters
Tribalism is a psychological gravity that pulls groups away from truth and toward conflict. Recognizing the spiral early allows leaders to implement ‘de-escalation’ protocols before the group loses its ability to think independently and descends into low-rung, ‘Golem’ behavior.
Core Concepts
- Shift 1: Distributed to Concentrated Tribalism: Historically, human tribalism was distributed across many tiers (local, state, national, international). When external threats (the “Strangers”) fade, tribal energy collapses into a single, massive internal divide (the “Cousins”).
- Shift 2: Hypercharged Tribalism: Technological and cultural catalysts that amplify the divide:
- Geographic Sorting: The “Big Sort” where individuals choose to live only near “people like them.”
- Narrowcast Media: The shift from broadcasting (North Star of truth) to narrowcasting (Attorneys for a tribe).
- Internet Algorithms: Parasitic loops that spoon-feed the Higher Mind and Primitive Mind political junk food and out-group bashing.
- The Golem Immune System: As groups move down the ladder, they develop “immune systems” to protect their narrative:
- Information Filtering: Cherry-picking and echo chambers.
- Information Twisting: Straw-manning, Motte-and-Bailey Fallacy, and correlation/causation errors.
- The Tipping Point: When a golem (low-rung group) becomes powerful enough to intimidate the high-rung majority into silence (Bystander Effect in the Battle of Ideas).
