Emergence Tower

Definition

The Emergence Tower is a mental model for understanding human collective behavior through the levels of emergence. It describes how individuals (the base level) combine to form super-organisms at higher levels. The quality of the super-organism—the Genie or the Golem—depends on the “How You Think” level of the constituent individuals.

Why It Matters

This model reveals that human groups naturally “snap” into either a super-intelligent Genie that solves problems or a destructive Golem that enforces conformity. Identifying which level of emergence your organization is operating at is the only way to prevent a team of brilliant individuals from becoming a single-minded, stupid mob.

Core Concepts

  • Individual Level: A human mind is an emergent property of billions of neurons.
  • The Genie (High-Rung Emergence): Formed when high-rung individuals collaborate. The Genie is a superintelligent force that solves complex problems (science, medicine, technology) and moves civilization “up the hill.” It is built on independent thought and diversity of perspective.
  • The Golem (Low-Rung Emergence): Formed when low-rung individuals (or high-rung individuals under the spell of the Higher Mind and Primitive Mind) conform. The Golem is a single-minded, destructive “superpredator.” It is powerful but stupid, capable only of conquering or protecting its “sacred narrative.”
  • Unitary Actor Emergence: In both cases, the group starts behaving as a single unit with its own goals and “immune system.”
  • The Catch-22: The biggest threat to humanity is low-rung humanity (Golems), but Golems persist because they have often been the best defense against other Golems in the Power Games and Liberal Games.
