Recalcitrance is the inverse of responsiveness; it measures how difficult it is to increase a system’s intelligence by applying a given amount of Optimization Power. It is the “resistance” that must be overcome to drive an Intelligence Explosion.

Recalcitrance determines the “speed of the end.” If AI recalcitrance drops suddenly at the human-parity point (a “hard takeoff”), we will have zero time to adjust our safety protocols or societal structures.
