Definition
Race Dynamics describe competitive situations in which multiple actors accelerate development of a dangerous technology because each fears that others will gain an irreversible advantage by moving faster.
Why It Matters
Race dynamics create a “suicide pact” where safety is discarded for speed. In the context of AI, if every actor fears being second, no one invests in alignment, leading to a world where we deploy a superintelligence we cannot control simply because we were afraid someone else would do it first. It is the engine of existential risk.
Core Concepts
- First-Mover Advantage: The belief that whoever deploys advanced AI first wins.
- Security Dilemma: Defensive measures by one side look offensive to others.
- Time Pressure: Safety is sacrificed for speed.
