Pragmatic Skepticism

Definition

Pragmatic skepticism accepts that absolute certainty is unavailable while rejecting the paralysis of doubting everything equally. Some beliefs are reliable enough to act on.

Why It Matters

Pragmatic skepticism is the “Balance Wheel” of the mind. It allows you to demand evidence for “Extraordinary Claims” without falling into the trap of “Solipsism” (doubting reality itself). Without it, you are either a fanatic or a fool. It is the only way to maintain a “Bayesian Credence” that is accurate enough for survival in a noisy world.

Core Concepts

  • Radical doubt can undermine any claim, including ordinary reality.
  • Skepticism is useful when targeted at weak inferences, not when applied indiscriminately.
  • Practical knowledge depends on standards appropriate to context.
  • Certainty is not required for rational action.
