Persons As Knowledge Creators

Definition

The spark is the capacity of persons to create explanatory knowledge. Deutsch argues that this makes people cosmically significant, not because the universe is centered on humans, but because knowledge creation is a rare transformative process.

Why It Matters

If people are just animals, we are a “plague” on the planet. But if people are knowledge creators, we are the “spark” that makes the universe understandable and transformable. This is the ultimate first principle of optimism: it implies that there is no problem that cannot be solved given the right knowledge. Ignoring this leads to “degrowth” mindsets and the fatal assumption that we have reached the “limits of growth,” which is the death knell of progress.

Core Concepts

  • Persons create explanations: A person is defined by the capacity to generate explanatory knowledge.
  • Mediocrity can become parochial: Treating humans as insignificant can ignore the unique role of knowledge creators.
  • Spaceship Earth is too small a frame: Limits that apply to static life do not automatically constrain knowledge-creating civilizations.
  • Biological evolution is bounded: Non-human evolution creates knowledge slowly and locally; people can create universal explanations.
