Beginning of Infinity

Definition

The “Beginning of Infinity” is the historical and epistemic inflection point where a civilization discovers the method of seeking good explanations through conjecture and criticism. It represents a transition from “static” societies (which suppress change and criticism) to “dynamic” societies capable of open-ended, infinite progress.

Why It Matters

It defines the difference between a stagnant society and one that can live forever through open-ended progress. This is the discovery that all problems are soluble and that seeking good explanations is the only way to solve them.

Core Concepts

  • Universal Explainers: Humans are universal explainers. Any physical process that is understandable can be understood by a human mind (given enough time and resources). There is no “superhuman” mind that is qualitatively different in its ability to create explanations.
  • Solubility of Problems: “All evils are due to a lack of knowledge.” Every problem that does not violate the laws of physics is soluble given the right knowledge.
  • Reach of Explanations: A “good explanation” is one that is hard to vary while still accounting for the phenomena. Such explanations often have “reach”—they explain things far beyond the original problem they were designed to solve.
  • Epistemic Optimism: The belief that we are at the beginning of an infinite journey. Progress is not a finite race toward a “final” truth, but a continuous transition from “problems” to “better problems.”
  • The Jump to Universality: The moment a system (like an alphabet, a number system, or a computer) becomes universal, capable of representing or performing any possible instance of its type. Human creativity is the ultimate jump to universality in the domain of explanation.
