Definition

A Monopoly is a market structure characterized by a single seller or provider of a unique product or service, giving the firm significant pricing power due to the absence of close substitutes and high barriers to entry.

Why It Matters

Understanding monopolies is critical for both business strategy and regulatory policy. For businesses, capturing a monopoly position is the ultimate goal to escape price wars and earn sustainable, high margins. For society, monopolies can lead to rent-seeking and inefficiency, but “creative monopolies” can also drive massive innovation by investing their excess profits into long-term research.
