Stress is a physiological and psychological response to perceived threats or high-demand environments. It involves the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which prioritize immediate survival over long-term reasoning.

Why It Matters

Most of our worst decisions and biggest regrets happen when we are under stress, precisely because our brain has “turned off” our high-level reasoning to prioritize survival. By understanding this biological hijack, we can build systems—both personally and professionally—that guard against “stress-induced stupidity,” ensuring that we remain rational even when the pressure is at its highest.

  • Cognitive Tunneling: Under stress, attention narrows to the most immediate perceived threat. This helps in physical danger but impairs the ability to process complex information or see “the big picture.”
  • Reversion to Heuristics: Stress depletes cognitive energy, causing the brain to fall back on its most well-worn habits, “gut feelings,” and biases rather than engaging in deliberate, first-principles thinking.
