God of the Gaps

Definition

God of the Gaps is a logical fallacy and a theological perspective in which “God” (or any supernatural agent) is invoked as the explanation for a phenomenon that is currently not understood by science. It treats a “gap” in scientific knowledge as positive evidence for the divine.

Why It Matters

The ‘God of the Gaps’ is an intellectual dead end that ties belief to ignorance; as science advances and the gaps shrink, this model systematically undermines faith while discouraging the very scientific inquiry that could provide real answers to the unknown.

Core Concepts

  • Argument from Ignorance (Ad Ignorantiam): The core of the fallacy is the claim: “We don’t know how X happens, therefore God did it.” It fails to provide positive evidence for the proposed explanation.
  • The Shrinking Gap: As scientific knowledge expands, the “gaps” in which a deity can reside become smaller and more specialized. Historically, things like lightning, disease, and planetary motion were “God’s domain” before naturalistic explanations were found.
  • Intelligent Design (ID): Modern proponents of ID often use the concept of Irreducible Complexity as a sophisticated version of God of the Gaps, arguing that certain biological structures are “currently unexplained” and therefore must be designed.
  • Falsifiability: The God of the Gaps argument is often unfalsifiable because it can always migrate to the next remaining unknown, no matter how much evidence is gathered.
