Fossil Fuel Depletion is the exhaustion of non-renewable energy resources (coal, oil, gas) through unchecked industrial consumption. From a longtermist perspective, it is a critical “Recovery Bottleneck” because easy-to-access fossil fuels may be a prerequisite for industrializing a civilization.
Why It Matters
Depleting easily accessible fossil fuels today may permanently ‘lock out’ future civilizations from re-industrializing after a collapse; we are currently spending a ‘one-time gift’ of energy that may be the only bridge from a primitive to an advanced state.
