Definition
Association Bias (or the “Association Fallacy”) is a cognitive bias where an individual makes a judgment about a person, group, or idea based on its relationship (association) with something else, rather than on its own merits.
Why It Matters
It leads to flawed judgments by linking unrelated things based on proximity rather than causal evidence. This bias is the root of many prejudices and marketing manipulations that bypass our rational faculties.
Core Concepts
- Guilt by Association: Discrediting an idea because it is held by a disliked person.
- Honor by Association: Accepting an idea because it is held by a liked or respected person.
- Pavlovian Conditioning: The biological root where the brain links two unrelated stimuli (e.g., a bell and food).
