Definition
The Wise-Singleton Sustainability Threshold is the minimal level of capability a political structure must possess to ensure its long-term survival and eventual colonization of the reachable universe. A system above this threshold, if it faces no intelligent opposition, can reliably plot a course to realize its full astronomical potential.
Why It Matters
The universe is open for the taking, but only for a system that can stop fighting itself long enough to launch. The wise-singleton threshold is the “escape velocity” for political structures; if we don’t hit it, we remain trapped on Earth until we eventually fail.
Core Concepts
- Singleton Condition: A sufficiently internally coordinated political structure with no external opponents.
- Wisdom Condition: The system is “patient and savvy” about existential risks, prioritizing long-term survival over short-term gains.
- Minimal Requirements: Bostrom argues this threshold is surprisingly low. Even contemporary human technology exceeds it, provided we could solve our internal coordination problems (becoming a “wise singleton”).
- Direct Reach of Paleolithic Humans: One could argue Homo sapiens passed this threshold 20,000 years ago, as they were in a position to survive and eventually reach the technological levels we have today.
- The Threshold of Superintelligence: A superintelligence with even a single human accomplice (actuator) far exceeds this threshold.
