Definition
Visibility Filtering is a content moderation model that distinguishes between the right to speak and the right to be algorithmically amplified. Its core principle is: “Freedom of Speech, but not Freedom of Reach.”
Why It Matters
Banning users creates “martyrs” and drives speech underground. Visibility filtering is a surgical alternative that preserves the right to speak while protecting the public square from being drowned out by high-decibel noise, maintaining the balance between liberty and order.
Core Concepts
- Deboosting: Instead of deleting a controversial tweet or banning a user, the algorithm reduces its “Visibility Score,” ensuring it does not show up in searches, trending lists, or recommendations.
- Max Deboosting/Demonetization: Specifically targeting “Negative/Hate” tweets to ensure they provide no revenue to the platform and can only be found if specifically sought out.
- Algorithmic Accountability: Moving from human censors to automated, transparent filters. Ideally, the code for these filters is made open-source (GitHub) for public audit.
- The “Teddy Bears and Puppies” Slider: A conceptual user-interface feature where individual users can set their own tolerance for “combat” or offensive content, moving the power from the platform to the person.
