The strategic decision to bring the manufacturing of components in-house rather than relying on external suppliers, enabling faster iteration, lower costs, and tighter quality control.

Why It Matters

Relying on external suppliers creates a “margin tax” and a “slowness tax.” Vertical integration is the strategy of the elite; it allows for 10x faster iteration and radical cost reduction, making it the primary weapon for companies like SpaceX to disrupt stale incumbents.
