The Devil Fallacy (or Devil Theory) is the cognitive error of attributing systemic conditions or bad outcomes to the deliberate villainy of a specific group or individual (the “Devil”), when the results actually stem from stupidity, necessity, or the emergent properties of a complex system.
Why It Matters
This fallacy is the root of tribal dehumanization. By assuming the ‘other’ is inherently evil rather than simply operating on different information or incentives, we destroy the possibility of negotiation and cooperation, leading to zero-sum conflicts that ruin both sides.

- Villainy over Stupidity: The tendency to think “bankers are scoundrels” or “politicians are evil” rather than recognizing they are individuals constrained by incentives and limited knowledge.
