Technology Coupling (AI)

Definition

Technology Coupling refers to a condition where developing one technology has a robust tendency to lead to the development of another, either as a necessary precursor, an obvious application, or a subsequent step. This creates a strategic challenge for Differential Technological Development, as promoting a “safe” technology may inadvertently hasten a “dangerous” one.

Why It Matters

Coupling means we can’t always pick and choose which technologies to develop. Progress in ‘safe’ AI often inadvertently powers ‘dangerous’ AI. Understanding these links is essential for strategic planning and ‘differential development’ that prioritizes safety over raw power.

Core Concepts

  • Precursor Coupling: High-tech microscopy and neuroscience needed for Whole Brain Emulation (WBE) provide the anatomical data and functional models that enable Neuromorphic AI.
  • Application Coupling: Progress in AGI research likely spills over into surveillance, social control, and advanced weaponry.
  • The WBE/AI Chain: Even if WBE arrives first and is safely handled, it may create a “second transition” risk by providing the tools or templates for ultimately more powerful synthetic AI.
  • Ambivalence: Coupling makes it difficult to turn “funding spigots” on or off with surgical precision.
