Technological Dependency

Definition

Technological Dependency and Stagnation describes a state where a civilization becomes so reliant on an autonomous system that it loses the ability to innovate, repair, or exist independently. In this state, “progress” is redefined as the continued functioning of the system, while human intelligence and physical capacity decline.

Why It Matters

When we stop understanding the tools we use, we become servants to the system rather than its masters. This leads to a ‘civilizational senility’ where we have the fruits of technology but lack the vigor to defend or advance the tree that bears them.

Core Concepts

  • The “White Fungus” Effect: The physical atrophy of a species that no longer needs to move, hunt, or gather. Humans become “swaddled lumps of flesh,” sensitive to the “outer air” and incapable of physical exertion.
  • Maintenance without Understanding: A system that is served with “increased efficiency and decreased intelligence.” Over time, the foundational knowledge required to understand the system as a whole is lost.
  • The Mending Apparatus Paradox: The belief that “things are always put right at once” leads to a loss of urgency and critical thinking. When the self-repair system fails, the society is paralyzed.
  • Adaptation to Dysfunction: Humans begin to “adapt themselves to every caprice of the Machine,” accepting defects (e.g., stinking water, jarring music) as part of the normal operation rather than demanding repairs.
