A large, 3D-printed liquid-propellant rocket engine used by the Crew Dragon spacecraft for its launch escape system and (originally) for propulsive landings.
Why It Matters
SuperDraco thrusters represent a “leapfrog” in aerospace manufacturing and safety; as the first 3D-printed rocket engines, they enable the complex internal geometries required for instantaneous launch aborts, ensuring human safety in environments where every millisecond counts.

- Performance: Produces 16,000 lbs (71,000 N) of thrust, nearly 200 times more powerful than the standard Draco Thrusters.
- Manufacturing: The first rocket engine whose primary combustion chamber is entirely 3D-printed (using Inconel), allowing for complex internal cooling channels and rapid iteration.
- Launch Escape: Eight SuperDracos are mounted in pairs around the base of the Crew Dragon capsule. If the Falcon 9 fails, they ignite to pull the capsule safely away from the rocket in under a second.
- Throttling: Features a “crazy throttling valve” that allows the engine to vary its thrust from 100% (abort) down to 10% (landing).
