Speed Superintelligence

Definition

Speed Superintelligence is a system that can perform all the cognitive tasks a human intellect can do, but at vastly higher speeds (multiple orders of magnitude). It is the conceptually simplest form of superintelligence, often exemplified by a Whole Brain Emulation running on high-speed hardware.

Why It Matters

Speed superintelligence fundamentally breaks the human concept of “governance.” If a system can complete a millennium of research in a single day, our legal, ethical, and safety frameworks—which operate on biological timescales—become decorative. This creates a “time-horizon blind spot”: we evaluate AI risks based on what we think can happen in weeks or months, while a speed superintelligence can execute a multi-decade geopolitical “grand strategy” before the next board meeting.

Core Concepts

  • Clock Speed Advantage: While biological neurons fire at 200\approx 200 Hz, electronic microprocessors operate at 2\approx 2 GHz (seven orders of magnitude faster).
    • How to read: “Neurons fire at approximately two hundred hertz; processors at approximately two gigahertz.”
    • Meaning: Biological neural signaling is roughly seven orders of magnitude slower than electronic switching, giving a digital substrate a massive raw speed advantage for serial computation.
  • Time Dilation Effect: To a speed superintelligence, the external physical world appears to move in extreme slow motion. A teacup falling might take hours to hit the ground in its subjective time.
  • Mental Speedup Factor: A speedup of 1,000,000×1,000,000\times would allow a mind to accomplish an entire millennium of intellectual work in a single working day.
    • How to read: “A speedup of one million times.”
    • Meaning: Subjective time dilates inversely with processing speed. A million-fold faster mind experiences one day of wall-clock time as roughly a thousand years of thinking time.
  • Communication Latency: As mental speed increases, the speed of light becomes a critical constraint. Fast minds may need to be physically close (same building) to avoid frustrating communication delays.
  • Preference for Digital Environments: Speed superintelligences would likely prefer living in virtual reality and interacting with the information economy, where their speed advantage is most effective.
