Specific Impulse

Definition

Specific Impulse (IspI_{sp}) is a measure of how efficiently a rocket engine or a jet engine uses its propellant.

  • How to read: “Specific impulse, I s p.”
  • Meaning: Specific impulse—the standard rocket-engine efficiency metric in seconds. Higher IspI_{sp} means more thrust per unit of propellant consumed (total impulse per unit propellant mass).

Why It Matters

Specific impulse is the ‘miles per gallon’ of the space age; it is the ultimate metric for engine efficiency, determining which propulsion systems can reach the outer planets and which are doomed to remain tethered to the high energy costs of the lower atmosphere.

  • Efficiency Metric: A higher IspI_{sp} means more thrust is produced for the same amount of fuel.
  • Exhaust Velocity: IspI_{sp} is directly proportional to the effective exhaust velocity (vev_e): Isp=ve/g0I_{sp} = v_e / g_0.
