Definition

Specific Heat Capacity (cc) is the quantity of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree Celsius.

Why It Matters

It determines heat retention and thermal buffering (e.g. water’s high specific heat regulates global climate).

  • Specific Heat (Thermal Inertia): Different substances “resist” changes in temperature differently.
  • Water: Has an exceptionally high specific heat, making it a great coolant and climate stabilizer.
  • The Anomaly of Water: Water is most dense at 4C4^\circ\text{C}. As it cools from 4C4^\circ\text{C} to 0C0^\circ\text{C}, it actually expands because it begins forming open-structured ice crystals.
  • How to read: “Water is densest at four degrees Celsius; between four and zero degrees it expands instead of contracting.”
  • Meaning: Below four degrees Celsius, hydrogen bonds organize water molecules into a less dense hexagonal lattice, causing ice to float.
