Serenity Prayer

Definition

The Serenity Prayer is a well-known invocation that asks for the wisdom to know the difference between what can and cannot be changed:

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.”

Why It Matters

The Serenity Prayer is the ‘stoic heuristic’ for stress management; it provides a mental filter for allocating cognitive energy only to the variables you can control, preventing the burnout that comes from fighting the unchangeable.

Core Concepts

  • Acceptance: Recognizing the limits of personal control (the domain of “not up to us”).
  • Courageous Action: Taking responsibility and action in the domain of what is up to us.
  • Discernment / Wisdom: The critical meta-skill of correctly identifying the boundary between the two.
