Schelling Point

Definition

A solution that people tend to choose by default in the absence of communication, based on the assumption that others will also choose it because it seems natural, special, or relevant to them.

Why It Matters

Schelling points are the ‘invisible gravity’ of social coordination; they allow us to achieve alignment in chaotic environments without explicit communication, providing the focal points around which markets and cultures stabilize.

Core Concepts

  • Focal Point: A choice that stands out from the others.
  • Implicit Coordination: Achieving alignment without explicit agreement.
  • Common Knowledge: Information that everyone knows, and everyone knows that everyone knows.
