Replacement CEO Test

Definition

The Replacement CEO Test is a thought experiment designed to break through the emotional inertia and Denial that often prevent leaders from making necessary, painful changes during a Strategic Inflection Point. It involves asking: “If the board fired me and brought in a new CEO, what would they do?”

Why It Matters

Leaders are often paralyzed by emotional attachment to failing projects. This test provides the ‘Outsider’s Objectivity’ needed to make the hard, surgical cuts that save an organization from obsolescence during a strategic inflection point.

Core Concepts

  • The Outsider’s Objectivity: A new CEO arrives with no emotional attachment to the “old” strategy, no personal relationships to protect, and no “sunk cost” in past decisions.
  • Breaking Denial: Management is often paralyzed by the dissonance between the failing reality and their past success. The test forces a perspective shift to see the business as it truly is, not as the leader wishes it were.
  • Immediate Action: The “test” is not just for thinking; it is a call to action. Grove’s insight was: “Why shouldn’t you and I walk out the door, come back in, and do it ourselves?”
