Reductio ad Absurdum

Definition

Reductio ad Absurdum (Latin for “reduction to the absurd”) is a form of argument that attempts to establish a claim by showing that its opposite leads to an absurd, false, or contradictory result.

Why It Matters

This is the “stress test” for truth. If an idea leads to an absurdity, the idea is wrong. It is a powerful tool for dismantling bad policy, false science, and illogical arguments. The stake is logical integrity: without this “sanity check,” we would be forced to accept contradictory and impossible premises as truth.

Core Concepts

  • Legitimate Proof: If assuming a premise leads to logical contradiction, the premise must be false.
  • Abuse of the Form: logic “stretched” to force a conclusion that does not actually follow.
  • False Analogy: Reductions relying on comparing non-equivalent things.
  • Slippery Slope: arguing that a single step leads inevitably to extreme outcomes without logical links.
