Ratio

Definition

A ratio is a quotient ab\frac{a}{b} (beq0b eq 0) that compares two numbers.

Why It Matters

Ratios allow us to scale quantities, compare relative sizes, and analyze speed, density, and financial rates without absolute values.

Core Concepts

  • Comparison: Ratios compare two homogeneous quantities (e.g. 3 miles to 4 miles) or heterogeneous quantities (e.g. miles per hour).
  • Scale Factors: Ratios define scaling relationships in maps, geometry, and engineering drawings.
  • Ratio Representation: A ratio can be written as a fraction ab\frac{a}{b} or with a colon a:ba:b.
    • How to read: “a over b, or a to b.”
    • Meaning: A comparative value showing how many times one number contains another.
