Definition

A ratio is a quotient $\frac{a}{b}$ ( $b eq 0$ ) that compares two numbers.

Ratios allow us to scale quantities, compare relative sizes, and analyze speed, density, and financial rates without absolute values.

Comparison: Ratios compare two homogeneous quantities (e.g. 3 miles to 4 miles) or heterogeneous quantities (e.g. miles per hour).
Scale Factors: Ratios define scaling relationships in maps, geometry, and engineering drawings.
Ratio Representation: A ratio can be written as a fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ $\frac{a}{b}$ or with a colon $a:b$ $a : b$ .
