Rat Sat

Definition

The 364-pound aluminum dummy payload launched on SpaceX’s fourth Falcon 1 flight (Flight 4), designed to replace the original Malaysian satellite.

Why It Matters

RatSat was the “survival bridge” for SpaceX. Without this dummy payload, there would have been no Flight 4, no proof of orbit, and likely no more company. It represents the “grit” phase of innovation where you must provide your own social proof because no customer is yet willing to risk their asset on your unproven dream.

Core Concepts

  • Purpose: A mass simulator to replicate commercial satellite weight without risking a multi-million dollar asset on an unproven rocket.
  • Naming: Derived from initials of designers: Ray Amador, Ray Thompson, Jeff Richichi.
  • Branding: Featured a “Rat Fink” logo as a nod to hot rod culture.
  • Logistical Pivot: Created after the Malaysian government refused to risk RazakSAT after Flight 3.
