Definition

SpaceX’s next-generation, high-pressure, liquid-fueled rocket engine designed for the Starship launch system, using a full-flow staged combustion cycle and methalox propellants.

Why It Matters

Raptor is the “engine of the future.” It is the first practical engine to approach the thermodynamic limits of chemical propulsion. Without its methalox cycle and extreme chamber pressure, building a self-sustaining city on Mars is energetically and economically impossible. It is the high-performance heart of multi-planetary life.
