Randomness

Definition

Randomness is the quality of lacking any predictable pattern or purpose. It represents the inherent “noise” and chaotic variables in the universe that we cannot control or fully predict.

Why It Matters

Humans are hardwired to see patterns in noise. If you don’t understand randomness, you will fall for the “Narrative Fallacy,” chasing fake trends and making high-stakes bets on pure luck. Distinguishing between signal and noise is the only way to build systems—in finance, health, or tech—that are robust enough to survive the unexpected.

Core Concepts

  • Narrative Fallacy: The human brain hates randomness and invents stories to explain random events.
  • Signal vs. Noise: Success involves distinguishing a meaningful trend from temporary fluctuation.
  • Luck vs. Skill: In high-randomness systems, a good outcome doesn’t always mean a good decision.
