Philosophy with a Deadline is the strategic decision to postpone work on “eternal” or “foundational” philosophical questions (like the nature of consciousness or ultimate metaphysics) to focus human intellectual resources on the urgent, practical challenge of AI alignment.
Why It Matters
We are in a “strategic light” period. If we spend our limited human intelligence solving “pure” philosophy (like the nature of the self) instead of “technical” philosophy (like AI alignment), we may never reach the era where those eternal questions can be answered. The deadline is the AGI transition. If we don’t solve the “Safety” problems first, we lose the chance to solve the “Meaning” problems forever.

- Deferred Gratification: Delegating “pure” philosophizing to more competent successors (superintelligence) after the transition is successfully managed.
- Urgency vs. Importance: While metaphysical questions are intrinsically important, alignment is urgent because it is needed before the intelligence explosion.
