Definition

SpaceX’s proprietary engine-mount structure for the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, consisting of one central engine surrounded by eight engines in a circular arrangement.

Why It Matters

The Octaweb is what made “Reusable Rocketry” a reality. Before SpaceX, an engine failure usually meant the loss of the entire vehicle. The Octaweb turned the rocket into a “survivable machine,” allowing it to finish its mission even with a “blown” engine. This design shift is the difference between “fragile” and “robust”—it is the reason why Falcon 9 has become the most reliable launch vehicle in history. It proves that the “arrangement” of parts is as important as the parts themselves.

  • Structural Shift: Replaced the tic-tac-toe pattern used in Falcon 9 v1.0.
  • Containment: Includes metal shielding between engines to isolate failures. If one engine explodes, the shielding protects the other eight, enabling “Engine Out” capability.
  • Mass Efficiency: Mounted engines more directly to the pressure dome of the propellant tank, removing the “dance floor” (wasted space) of the previous design.
  • Manufacturing: Made of high-strength aluminum alloy; designed for ease of assembly and high-cadence production.
