Movement Building (Longtermism)

Definition

Movement Building (or “Meta-Impact”) is the strategic effort to grow and strengthen the community of individuals and institutions working on Longtermism. It is based on the idea that spreading the idea of doing good can have a higher expected value than any single direct intervention.

Why It Matters

Building a movement for the long-term future is the only way to safeguard humanity from existential risks. If we focus only on the next election or quarterly report, we remain blind to the slow-moving threats that could end our species. It is the ultimate exercise in collective responsibility.

Core Concepts

  • The Meta-Multiplier: If you convince one other person to do as much good as you, you have doubled your lifetime impact. convince two, and you have tripled it.
  • Field Building: Creating the conditions for a new area of research or policy to become “respectable” and well-funded (e.g., the transition of AI Safety from a fringe topic to a mainstream field).
  • The Portfolio Approach: Thinking about the community as a whole. Not everyone should do direct work; some must specialize in outreach, fundraising, and community support.
  • Moral Entrepreneurs: Spreading new norms (like the moral worth of future generations) to shift the “values trajectory” of civilization.
