Lying Definition

Definition

A Lie is an act of intentionally misleading others when they expect honest communication. It is characterized not by the objective falsity of the statement (error), but by the intent of the communicator to represent their beliefs as something other than what they are.

Why It Matters

A precise definition of lying is the ‘firewall’ of interpersonal and institutional trust; without clarity on what constitutes a deliberate falsehood, we cannot hold individuals accountable or maintain the integrity of shared information.

Core Concepts

  • Intentionality: The defining feature of a lie is the intent to deceive. A person can be mistaken (untruthful in content) without lying (untruthful in intent).
  • Expectation of Honesty: Context matters. Stage magicians and poker players are not “lying” in the ethical sense because the expectation of honest communication has been suspended.
  • Truth vs. Truthfulness:
    • Truth: Accuracy in representing the objective world.
    • Truthfulness: Accuracy in representing one’s internal beliefs. One can be truthful while being factually wrong.
  • Deception with Truth: Using literal truths to create false impressions (e.g., “I’m calling from the White House” while standing on the sidewalk outside).
