Linear Responsibility Chart (LRC)

Definition

A Linear Responsibility Chart (LRC) is a matrix that maps project tasks (from the WBS) to specific team members or roles, indicating the degree of responsibility or involvement for each person.

Why It Matters

Ambiguity is the enemy of execution. An LRC provides the “accountability matrix” for a project, ensuring that every task has a clear owner and every contributor knows their role, preventing the “bystander effect” in complex teams.

Core Concepts

  • The Matrix Structure: Tasks are listed in the first column; roles/people are listed across the top row.
  • Responsibility Codes:
    • P (Primary Responsibility): The person accountable for the task.
    • S (Secondary Responsibility): Support or assistance.
    • W (Worker): Executes the specific task.
    • A (Approval): Signs off on the final output.
    • R (Review): Provides feedback or expertise.
  • Utility: Clarifies expectations and prevents “balls being dropped” in complex projects.
