Just-in-Time Manufacturing

Definition

Just-in-Time (JIT) Manufacturing is a methodology aimed primarily at reducing times within the production system as well as response times from suppliers and to customers. It is a key component of Lean manufacturing.

Why It Matters

Waste is the enemy of excellence. JIT manufacturing proves that by aligning production exactly with demand, you can eliminate the “inventory tax” on your capital, surfacing hidden inefficiencies and creating a hyper-responsive, high-quality production system.

Core Concepts

  • Waste Reduction (Muda): Eliminating anything that does not add value.
  • Pull System: Production is triggered by customer demand rather than forecasts.
  • Continuous Flow: Moving items through the process one at a time without stops.
  • Total Quality Management: Building quality into the process.
