Interoperability

Definition

Interoperability in M&S refers to the ability of different simulation models, data formats, and software tools to intercommunicate and exchange information effectively.

Why It Matters

Silos are where value goes to die. In an increasingly networked world, the ability for different systems to “speak the same language” is a force multiplier that makes the entire infrastructure more than the sum of its parts.

Core Concepts

  • Barriers to Convergence: Incompatible data formats and lack of standardized communication protocols often prevent the integration of distinct simulation approaches.
  • LVC Integration: Critical for the success of Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) simulations, where disparate systems must operate in a unified environment.
  • Standardization: The need for common frameworks (like those pursued by DMSO or JNTC) to overcome “not invented here” cultures and technical silos.
