Inertia

Definition

Inertia is the property of things to resist changes in motion. An object at rest tends to stay at rest; an object in motion tends to stay in motion in a straight line at constant speed, unless acted upon by a non-zero net force.

Why It Matters

Inertia explains why it is so difficult to start a new project, change a corporate culture, or stop a bad habit. It is the fundamental “resistance” of the universe to change. By recognizing inertia as a physical and psychological law, we can stop blaming ourselves for “laziness” and instead focus on applying the specific, sustained “force” required to break the status quo and create new momentum.

  • Historical Perspective:
    • Aristotle’s View: Classified motion as Natural (earth falls, smoke rises) or Violent (pushes/pulls). Believed heavier objects fall faster and rest is the “natural state.”
    • Galileo’s Refutation: Discredited Aristotle through experiment. Showed that objects of different weights fall at the same rate and that once moving, no force is needed to keep an object moving if friction is absent.
  • Mass as a Measure of Inertia: Mass is the quantity of matter in an object and is a numerical measure of the object’s inertia. The more mass an object has, the greater its resistance to a change in its state of motion.
  • Resistance to Change: In organizations and habits, inertia is the default. People and systems prefer to keep doing what they are currently doing.
