Identity Cascade

Definition

An Identity Cascade (or the “Clumsy Gods” metaphor) is the process by which a minor intervention in the present causes a total divergence in the identities of all future people. Because human identity is extremely fragile (dependent on the millisecond-timing of conception), small changes today eventually replace the entire future population with a different set of individuals.

Why It Matters

It describes the social phenomenon where people rapidly adopt a new group identity once it reaches a certain “tipping point” of popularity. Understanding these cascades is key for anyone trying to drive social change or predict the sudden shifts in public opinion and cultural trends.

Core Concepts

  • The Marty McFly Fallacy: Time travel stories often depict characters returning to a present where their siblings are the same people despite changes in the past. In reality, any change in the past would have changed the identity of every subsequent person born.
  • Rapid Divergence: Because one person’s schedule change impacts the schedules of those they interact with, the divergence spreads exponentially. MacAskill estimates that a single year of choosing the bus over a car in a city could eventually change the identity of everyone born in the future.
  • Clumsy Gods: We act like “clumsy gods,” radically steering the course of history and the composition of the future with every trivial choice.
