Hyperactive Agency Detection (HADD)

Definition

Hyperactive Agency Detection (HADD) is the tendency to interpret events or movements as the deliberate intent of a conscious agent, rather than the product of natural, unguided forces. It is the core mechanism behind the “conspiracy theorist inside each of us.”

Why It Matters

This evolutionary trait explains why humans are prone to seeing “intent” in random events, leading to superstitions and conspiracy theories. Recognizing this bias is a key step in developing a more scientific, objective worldview and avoiding the traps of magical thinking.

Core Concepts

  • Agent vs. Object: The brain fundamentally distinguishes between things that have agency (will, intent) and generic objects. Agency is perceived in anything that moves in a non-inertial way.
  • Essence Attribution: Humans imbue agents with a “living force” or essence, often treating non-living things (like a favorite toy or a computer) as having agency.
  • Conspiracy Thinking: HADD detects patterns in unrelated events and assumes a hidden “mastermind” is orchestrating them.
  • Religious Roots: HADD is a primary candidate for the evolutionary origin of belief in gods or spirits as “invisible agents” behind natural phenomena.
