Gestalt Principles

Definition

Gestalt Principles are a set of laws in psychology describing how humans perceive visual elements as organized patterns or wholes, rather than as individual components. Key laws include proximity, similarity, closure, continuity, figure-ground, and common fate.

Why It Matters

Gestalt principles are the ‘operating system’ of human vision; by understanding how the brain automatically groups and simplifies information, designers can create interfaces that are intuitive and clear rather than overwhelming and chaotic.

Core Concepts

  • Proximity: Elements close together are perceived as a group.
  • Similarity: Similar elements are grouped.
  • Closure: The mind fills in gaps to perceive complete shapes.
  • Continuity: Elements aligned are seen as a single unit.
  • Figure-Ground: Distinguishing object from background.
  • Common Fate: Elements moving together are grouped.
