Fire Attack Strategy

Definition

Fire Attack (Chinese: 火攻, Huǒgōng) is the strategic use of environmental disruption to create crisis and confusion in the opponent’s ranks. It is a catalyst for engagement, emphasizing that destructive force must be subordinated to objective strategy and the “Golden Rule of Restraint.”

Why It Matters

Fire attack is the strategic use of chaos to force an opening; however, its “Philosophy of Restraint” provides a critical warning: destructive force must never be used out of anger, as a nation or organization destroyed for temporary satisfaction can never be restored.

Core Concepts

  • The Five Targets of Disruption:
    1. Personnel: Burning people (direct attack).
    2. Supplies: Burning stores and food.
    3. Infrastructure: Burning equipment and logistics.
    4. Capital: Burning storehouses and warehouses.
    5. Transport: Burning weapons, squadrons, or boats.
  • The Catalyst Logic: Fire is a tool of confusion. It is only effective if you strike while the enemy is disoriented. If the enemy remains calm during a fire, wait for the peak of the crisis before acting.
  • Fire vs. Water:
    • Fire (Clarity): Used to disrupt and reveal; it rapaciously destroys value.
    • Water (Strength): Used to isolate and divide; it can cut off an opponent but does not allow for resource capture.
  • The Philosophy of Restraint:
    • The Three “Do-Nots”: Do not mobilize without advantage; do not act without gain; do not fight when not in danger.
    • Permanence vs. Temporality: Anger is fleeting, but a destroyed nation cannot be restored. Leadership is the art of preventing permanent losses for temporary feelings.
  • Logistics of Merit: Victory without reward is “unlucky” and leads to systemic decay. An enlightened leader ensures those who achieve results are compensated.
